28 Days of NYC Summer
Day 3
June 21. HCOP Day 2. I meet up with the attending as well as the rest of the treatment team (a resident, intern, OT and PT) and make our morning rounds.
(Pause to do laundry.)
My first official experience with morning rounds was definitely more low key than the media makes it out to be. Not all cases are going to be those rare, what-are-the-chances-of-that-happening type of scenarios; more common in rehab is a fall down the stairs, a stumble at home, or sudden pains and spasms resulting in knee or hip replacements and/or pain management. Rounds are basically meant to check up on the pt while training and educating the resident. They’re meant to be comprehensive and quick, so as to see each person within a time limit, in the case of these particular rounds, an hour. I can’t tell you how many times I heard DVT prophylaxis…
After visiting all the inpts the attending I’m with is responsible for, he had a meeting with a couple other people regarding the expansion of Rusk rehab at the Langone Medical Center. I don’t think I’m quite at liberty to discuss these things, but it was definitely informative to hear about the growth that is to take place at this institution.
Fast forward the day, and I observe and learn about hormone therapy, arthritis and its management, a few amputees and a couple sports injuries.
Close out the day with a group meeting, and we end Tuesday with a little rendezvous to a trendy little bar and lounge called Vertigo. (It was aight, but nothing phenomenal in my opinion. Restaurants, bars and lounges will be reviewed in Yelp.)
I’ve really gotta power through these journals, this is only Day 3.
